Right, so (nearly) everyone im close to have had 'Swine Flu'. My sister/her fella & kids, my nephew/his wife & kids, this girl i work with, a few of my mates. I have been exposed like a million times and i havent had it!! Does anyone else think that people might just be blowing things a tad out of proportion???!!!!!!!

Wow, I thought the swine flu was only here in the states. I had never heard anything about it being overseas!

There are 176 confirmed cases of it where I just moved from, about 2 hours from Mexico.

But yes, I think it has been blown out of proportion. From what I understand it's pretty much a standard flu but can be much worse if it lingers too long.

Jono, you're an RN right? What's the good word mate?

I had it a few weeks ago... no big deal really... just like a nasty flu.

Another example of the media blowing something minor completely out of proportion.

I don't think it's the severity of the flu that's the problem but how fast it's spread... cases quickly popped up all over the world in what, a week? But yes, the media has still blown it out of proportion, like they do with everything else.... though, WHO hasn't helped much by labeling it a pandemic.. Rolling Eyes

its not the virus to worry about its the tamiflu vaccine that i believe will eventually mutate into something nasty, i.e. bird and swine flu.

look who invested in the vaccine and tell me if you would really let someone put that shit in you.

government is crazy yo.

Personally, I never vaccinate for the flu, and neither will my children. Varicella, either.

Thats just it nower days - people are so quick to want something wrong with them, they will blow anything like this, or anything they can for that matter, out of proportion.
Im not big on going to the docs anyway let alone for a cold, be it a bad one. And i do find it funny that my sister would have a boil bigger than the next person if they said they had one.

the word pandemic actualy has to do with how many people have caught it in a short space of time, not the severity of the illness. a bad flu is exactly what it is but it will kill a lot of weaker people; old, young already sick that sort of thing. either way the medias reaction should be no big suprise to anyone this is the sort of shit that sells and as far as im concerned thats a reflection on society and not somthing you can blame directly on the media. i mean absolutly what they do should probably be seen as ambulance chassing of sorts but they do it because its popular.

yeah, that's true.... I think society as a whole is begging for "the big one"... the end of the world, apocalypse, whatever... everyone seems to totally focus on every disaster or potential for disaster while humanitarian efforts and advances in medicine and technology take a backseat... I know I'm guilty of it sometimes :/

... Aren't we all?? Following the media is a habit none of us can avoid these days, society is built around what we read in the paper or see on TV so if the media says 'this' is important then 'that' don't matter anymore. Unless its hot gossip, people just don't seem to care. I try not to be a dedicated follower of media interests but like you Reef, i find it hard not with the world the way it is!!!
